The IELTS Academic English qualification is frequently required for university and college entrance. As a guide, entrance to a university course normally requires an IELTS score of 6.0 - 7.0, and college courses normally require 5.0 minimum . It is best to contact the college or university you wish to attend directly to find out what IELTS score they require for entry to one of their courses. The test covers speaking, listening, reading and writing skills.
This group course covers all four skills that are tested. It is suitable for people who have already gained a 5.0 and want to improve their band score, or those who have never taken the test but are of an equivalent level. Our minimum entry requirement for this course is intermediate level (CEFR B1).
Unfortunately, we are not able to offer group courses to anyone who is lower than this level. We know that lower-level students have more success in the exam if they focus on improving their general English first.
Private lessons may be more suitable for anyone wanting to focus on one particular area of the exam, or for students who have a low level of English but must take the exam.
The minimum age for this course is 18.
You will develop exam techniques and work on improving the four skills that are tested in the academic version of the exam (speaking, listening, reading and writing). You will also have lessons on the grammar and vocabulary areas that are important for doing well.
Our IELTS teachers will organise practice tests to monitor your development. This can also include a speaking test that is done on a one-to-one basis, as well as writing feedback, with a member of our teaching team who is experienced in this area.
This course must be booked for a minimum of 4 weeks. See our start dates.

There are four parts to the exam – listening, reading, writing and speaking. The total test time is around 2 hours and 45 minutes. Listening, reading and writing must be completed on the same day, with no real breaks in between them. The order in which these tests are taken may vary. The speaking test will either be after a break on the same day as the other three tests, or up to a week before or after the other tests. This will depend on your test centre.
You can sit the IELTS examination all over the world. There is a test centre in Glasgow, but you can sit the test in the location that suits you best. You can use this link to the IELTS website to find a suitable test location. We are happy to help you to select a test centre and apply for the examination.
The cost of the examination is dependant on which test centre you use. The costs range from £170 to £200 for the Academic test.
